Throughout 2019-2020 I lead a series of workshops in Armenia and Kazakhstan on News Literacy topics.
Over three days, we covered important topics such as the ethics and responsibilities of journalists, how news is created, how to identify and sort misinformation, and habits of mind for determining when fact-checking is necessary and how to verify claims and sources online.
Participants were able to create explainer videos explaining different news literacy concepts, such as information neighborhoods. Here's an example:
The workshops culminated in a project design session during which participants created follow-on grant projects to bring news literacy principles back to their home communities.
Participant surveys post-workshop were overwhelmingly positive.
